Fall Weekends in Warren County: How the 2026 Season Actually Unfolds

Ask three neighbors what "fall in Warren County" means and you will get three different answers. One will talk about the lake shutting down after Labor Day. Another will point at Warrenton's Main Street. A third will list vineyards and community theater. All three are right, and none of them is the whole picture.

The useful thing to understand, if you already live here, is that the season runs on three overlapping calendars. The lake calendar closes late. The Main Street calendar peaks in October. The shoulder-season circuit fills the weekends in between. Knowing which weekend belongs to which calendar is the difference between a full Saturday and a wasted drive to a padlocked gate.

The Lake Calendar Runs Longer Than You Think

Lake Gaston does not clock out at Labor Day. The signature community event of late summer sits on the second Saturday in August, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.

One of the Lake Gaston region's most anticipated summer traditions is set to return as The Crossing celebrates its 21st year on Saturday, August 8, 2026, bringing together residents, visitors, businesses, and community supporters for a unique challenge across the waters of Lake Gaston. The format is deliberately inclusive: the annual event invites participants to make their way across a one-mile section of Lake Gaston by swimming, rowing, floating, or walking. If you are new to the area, this is the one to circle. In 2025, more than 250 participants took part in The Crossing, and early registration opens June 15, 2026, and participants are encouraged to register in advance. Registration is $30 before the event and $35 on the day of the event. Proceeds go to the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Four days later, the lake's civic life picks up again indoors. The Lake Gaston Association's August Membership Meeting will be on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the Lake Gaston Lions Club Den, 139 Stanley Rd, Henrico, NC. If you own waterfront and have not been to one, this is where the practical stuff surfaces: shoreline rules, water quality reports, the kind of conversation that never makes it to Facebook.

The competitive side of the lake extends into shoulder season too. Littleton hosts the East Coast Wakeboarding Championship in Littleton, NC, featuring all ages and skill levels, competitive divisions, prizes, food, and a full day of action on the water. Between that and the Lake Gaston Striper Club, which meets at the Lions Club building on Stanley Road, the water stays busy well after the rental cabins have emptied.

Warrenton's Main Street Peaks in October

If the lake's calendar is a slow taper, downtown Warrenton's is a spike. Two Saturdays in October do most of the work.

The Harvest Moon Festival is the anchor. Festival guides list the Warrenton Harvest Moon Festival in Warrenton on 10/10. If you have not been, the character of it is worth describing precisely. Downtown Warrenton hosts the festival presented by the town's Revitalization Committee. Children discover lots to enjoy, whether they play Warren County Parks and Recreation games, see Warrenton Rural Volunteer Fire Department apparatus, or just play with leaves or pose for a photo at one of the event's fall props photo stations. Participants are treated to a full day of activities stretching down much of Warrenton's Main Street. Attendees can learn more about the local area at the Revitalization Committee's information kiosk, learn about the history of quilting in Warren County at the Heritage Quilters' booth, or visit Newell Farms Wildlife Rehabilitation Center's display. Food vendors stretch out along Main Street, while crafters and artisans offer their wares on Courthouse Square.

Sixteen days later, the same square turns costumed. Harvest-Ween takes place on the Warren County Courthouse Square. The festival blends the charm of a traditional harvest market with the excitement of Halloween festivities. As the sun sets, the courthouse square transforms into a Halloween wonderland. Attendees can test their bravery in a Haunted Garden Maze and take an eerie Ghost Walk. A costume contest offers prizes.

Between the two festivals, the Saturday market continues to run. Old Town Warrenton keeps its Summer Market from April 19 through November 22, 8am to 12pm on Saturdays, featuring all locally grown and produced fruits, vegetables, poultry, pork, beef, eggs, pies, breads and more, at its location in the public parking lots at Ashby St and W Lee St. A Holiday Market runs the first three Saturdays in December from 9am to 12pm. That six-week gap between the November close and the December reopen is the only real quiet stretch on the market calendar all year.

The Season at a Glance

For residents planning around out-of-town visitors, in-laws, or grandkids, here is the short list of confirmed 2026 dates worth writing on the fridge.

Dates for the Lake Gaston Fantasy Faire and the Warren Wayfinders walks are still being firmed up by organizers as of this writing. Both are worth watching for.

The Shoulder-Season Circuit

The weekends that do not carry a headline festival are, in some ways, the ones that separate a resident's fall from a visitor's. This is the circuit that lives outside the marquee events.

Start with wine. Two Warren County producers anchor a countryside afternoon: Seven Springs Farm and Vineyard and Grapenutts Wine and Cheese, where visitors can sample locally crafted wines, enjoy live music, and take in rolling countryside views just minutes from the lake. If you have friends coming down from Richmond or in from Raleigh, this is a cleaner story than trying to sell them on a boat ride in 55-degree weather.

Add culture. The Lakeland Cultural Arts Center hosts plays, concerts, and community events throughout the year. Check the fall program before you commit to a Saturday drive north.

Add whimsy. The Lake Gaston Fantasy Faire has become a fixture worth planning around. Elizabeth Onyambu put together the Fantasy Faire at Lake Gaston Coffee Company, and she has always wanted to attend a Renaissance fair. Kaylin Bentley, owner and artist at Holly Fox Homestead, assisted with the noon to 6 p.m. event. Patrons attend for free, with people dressed as pirates, Vikings, Knights, and other characters from a time long ago. A group called the Knights of Myth performs sword play. Organizers are looking at doing it again next year in November, possibly for two days.

Add walking. The Warren Wayfinders Series is a set of guided walks running through 2026, with later walks pairing with a bonus campout. If you have been meaning to see more of the county on foot rather than through a windshield, this is the low-commitment way to do it.

Add the historical curiosity. The county's own storytelling program feeds directly into the shoulder-season mood: county and municipal government officials and local historians present information about the people, places, and events that shaped the county. Those attending have an opportunity to share a brief story. The event is part of the 2026 Let's Talk Warren County series presented by the Warren County Board of Commissioners and county administration.

A Working Weekend Template

If you host regularly, the useful pattern for a fall Saturday looks roughly like this.

Morning: Warrenton Farmers Market at Ashby and W Lee, 8 to noon. Coffee at a Main Street shop while you sort out what you bought.

Midday: Drive out to Seven Springs or Grapenutts. Bring a jacket after mid-October.

Afternoon: Choose your lane. Lake time from an Eaton Ferry-area launch if the weather holds. A matinee or gallery visit at Lakeland Cultural Arts if it doesn't.

Evening: Dinner in Littleton or back in Warrenton. Check whether the Lions Club or a marina is running a live music night.

The trick, and the reason locals get more out of the season than weekenders, is treating the three calendars as one integrated map rather than three competing ones. The Crossing does not compete with the Harvest Moon Festival. The Fantasy Faire does not compete with the vineyards. They stack.

One more piece of context worth holding onto. The lake itself is nearly 34 miles long along the Roanoke River, formed in 1963 with the completion of the Gaston Dam by Dominion Energy, serving as both a hydroelectric reservoir and a recreational reservoir with impressively stable water levels. That stability is why the fall shoulder season here works the way it does. The lake does not draw down and turn muddy the way some Piedmont reservoirs do in October, so the water stays part of the calendar longer than newcomers expect.
